When Should I Bring My Child in to See an Orthodontist?
At Premier Orthodontics, we believe in two-phase orthodontic treatment.
Phase One Treatment
We recommend you bring your child in for an initial orthodontic exam at age seven.
At this age, your child has a mixture of baby teeth and adult teeth. Our orthodontists look for potential problems in the alignment of your child’s teeth and discuss treatment plans to avoid issues.
Phase Two Treatment
After Phase One Treatment, our orthodontists will recommend a waiting period before starting Phase Two Treatment. Sometimes this is a few months, and sometimes it’s a few years.
Usually, your child comes in for Phase Two Treatment once their teeth and jaw are more developed, between the ages of 11 and 12. At this age, our orthodontists will determine what treatment they need for their adult teeth.
When Should Teenagers Get Braces?
There’s no one perfect age for children and teenagers to get braces.
Many teenagers get braces between ages 12 and 13. By this age, most children have lost all their baby teeth, and have their permanent teeth.
Sometimes teens will get braces at this age, or sometimes our orthodontists will recommend they wait a few years. Our orthodontists can see how your child’s smile is developing, and if there are alignment issues that need to be corrected.
Even though many children get braces around 12 or 13 years old, you’ll want to bring your child in for their first orthodontic appointment by age 7 or 8.
Can I See An Orthodontist as an Adult?
Although it’s common for patients to get orthodontics and braces as a teenager, many people come in for their first orthodontic visit in their 20s or later. In fact, 1 in 5 people who get braces is over the age of 18.
By adulthood, your teeth are fully developed, and our orthodontists can see alignment problems that might need treatment.
